How lenders read your credit score

What CIBIL and commercial scores mean for MSME approvals, interest rates, and how to strengthen your profile before applying.

Personal CIBIL still matters for SMEs

Even for a Pvt Ltd or LLP, most banks pull promoter CIBIL. A score above ~750 with no recent write-offs or settlements usually helps pricing and turnaround. Multiple recent enquiries, maxed-out personal cards, or delayed EMIs are common reasons a “good business” still gets a decline or a higher rate.

What commercial / bureau reports show

Where a commercial credit report exists, lenders look at GST-linked dues, OD/CC utilisation, cheque returns, and CMA trends. High utilisation on existing limits (above ~75–80% for months) signals stress even if EMIs are paid on time. Clean GST filing and regular banking credits often weigh as much as the score itself.

Fixes that actually move the needle

  • Clear overdue cards and personal EMIs before you apply.
  • Stop shopping multiple lenders in the same week — each enquiry is visible.
  • Keep OD/CC utilisation lower for 2–3 months if you plan a new limit.
  • Ensure KYC names, PAN, and addresses match across GST, bank, and bureau.
  • Do not close old well-behaved loans just before applying; age of credit helps.

Score is not the only gate

A strong score will not override weak banking, related-party circular credits, or unexplained cash deposits. A modest score with 2+ years of clean GST and surplus can still get approved on CGTMSE or a smaller ticket. Share the full picture with your advisor so the file is positioned honestly.
